In 1990, Bonnie Gibson and Bobbie Reed took 15 blind people sailing on a 40-foot sailboat. Each year, they took more people out and enlisted more skippers to assist. Now, although Bonnie and Bobbie are still actively involved in the event, it has grown so large that it is sponsored by the Women's Sailing Association - Orange County (WSA-OC) and hosted by the American Legion Yacht Club and Post 291 Family.
Now, each year, over 240 blind or visually impaired individuals and their escorts spend a day sailing with volunteers from both WSA-OC and the American Legion Yacht Club. Approximately 45 skippers and boats from the community are needed to participate in this worthwhile event. Over 150 volunteers are needed to act as escorts, servers, crew, guide dog sitters and more. If you would like to be of assistance or you would like to donate items for the fund-raising drawing or service dog gift bags, please send us an email message. We are sure that you will enjoy this very special event.
