General Membership Meeting

Special Guest Speaker

Important Update:  The America's Cup races are in progress right now.  Have you ever wanted an inside look at how the crews operate and strategize on these big fabulous ultra-fast boats?  Then come and hear Phiip Thompson, our speaker for this meeting. Philip has skippered America's Cup boats for Australia.  He plans to give you an inside look at how these big, beautiful boats operate.  He will be speaking at the beginning of our meeting so come early and order one of the outstanding “Thursday night dinner specials” off the menu and hear all about the America's Cup racing.

Also it’s that time again where we begin the process of recruiting board members for the next year.  The 2025 Nominating Committee has been on the lookout for qualified and interested people who want to serve on the ALYC Board and they will be presenting their proposed slate of 2025 Board members at the GMM on 10/10/2024. If you believe you are qualified and ready to serve, and you did not get a chance to discuss service with the Nominating Committee, nominations may be made from the floor during the GMM on 10/10/2024. Nominations must be accepted in person, or in writing, at the GMM on 10/10/2024.

NOTE: Only Flag Members are eligible to serve on the board. Flag Members are American Legion members from Post 291.

Auxiliary and SAL members are not eligible to serve on the board.

Elections will be held at the ALYC GMM on 11/14/2024.

American Legion Yacht Club is honored to have one of the world's premier racing skippers” speak at our October 10 general membership meeting at 6:30 pm.

Phllip Thompson grew up in Sydney Australia.  He began sailing at age 6 on Star boats.  By age 9 he was racing and winning.  At 15 he began crewing on larger boats while continuing to race his dinghy single handed. By 18 he was getting invitations to crew for national and world champion skippers.  As a crew he won many one design championships including a world championship in the 5.5 class. He raced the renowned Etchells Class for over a decade winning two 3rd place world championship trophies.

In 1980 Philip won selection to compete in world championships for Laser Class the most competitive class in the world with 100,000 boats. In 1983, Philip won selection to crew on the Australian 12 meter America's Cup Yacht, the Challenge 12 the year Australia II won the cup with the famous winged keel.  In advance of the 1987 defense of the America's Cup in Perth, Western Australia, he was invited to be the helmsman of South Australia the syndicate from that state. After elimination of South Australia, he was invited to take-over as skipper / helmsman of Steak N Kidney, the syndicate from Sydney, that was beginning to perform well. He then went on to skipper Steak N Kidney in two 12 meter world championships, Sardinia, Italy and Lulea, Sweden. In 1992, he was invited to skipper Challenge Australia, the first of the IAAC class, in San Diego in the 1992 America's Cup eliminations.

Philip now is referred to by many as "Mr. Harbor 20" here in Newport.  If he is not racing Shana's Secret, he is most likely tending to someone else's Harbor 20.
