Have you noticed how far ahead the winners can end up in a sailboat race?
While you may find yourself sailing alongside another boat early in the race at about the same speed, that boat might finish 10, 20, or even more boat lengths ahead of you. It is not because they sailed that much faster than you, but rather because they sailed MUCH LESS DISTANCE to get around the course by sailing on the lifted tack on the upwind legs and the headed tack on the downwind legs.
Learn these race strategies, tactics, and so much more!

This event will be held in the ALYC Hut.

“Strategy” is a plan you make before the start as to how you would sail the course as fast as possible in the absence of other boats. “Tactics” is about boat-to-boat maneuvers that help you to sail to your strategic plan. While a lot of unpredictable things can happen sailboat racing is like any other game. A lot of predictable things do happen over and over, and with time you learn to recognize them and act accordingly with practiced responses. If you are new to the sport, or find yourself struggling to be competitive, come and learn what the experienced racers already know!
