Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, series has been cut to 7 races.
Due to continuing COVID restrictions, we will be conducting our General Membership Meeting again via Zoom. But that doesn't mean we can't have a great meeting! Please join us for a club business update and to hear our guest speaker, Sarah Hirsch from the OCC School of Sailing and Seamanship.
Join Captain Sarah Hirsch for sea stories and a preview into the new Orange Coast College Mariner Training Center, now under construction across the street from the current School of Sailing and Seamanship. Sarah holds an all-oceans Masters License and has led youth and adult sailing programs on an array of vessels, including modern sloops and cutters, open pulling boats, and “tall ships” of many types. She has a passion for sail training and providing pathways for new mariners to develop knowledge and skills on the water. She joined OCC School of Sailing and Seamanship as a manager at the end of August 2019 and is working with the staff and faculty to bring new classes and programs to the community and the Professional Mariner program. She will share sea stories and photos from her voyages, as well as an update on sailing school happenings despite COVID-19. In addition, Sarah will provide an overview of plans for the new building including a Full Mission Bridge Simulator, Radar classroom, hands-on safety and boat maintenance classes, and of course, the pedestrian bridge over Pacific Coast Highway.

The annual Sail for the Visually Impaired (SVI) has grown to become one of the most important and well attended philanthropic events in Newport Harbor. Each year, over 250 blind or visually impaired guests and their escorts spend a day sailing with volunteers from the American Legion Yacht Club and other area yacht clubs. There are over 150 volunteers acting as sailing skippers, crew, escorts to and from the docks, meal servers, guide dog sitters, check-in personnel, marina control, parking assignment, and much more.
SVI had humble beginnings, starting In 1990 when Bonnie Gibson and Bobbie Reed of the Women's Sailing Association - Orange County (WSA-OC) took 15 blind people sailing on a 40-foot sailboat. A year later, in 1991, American Legion Yacht Club (ALYC) Commodore J.T. Tarwater established ALYC and Post 291 as the host for SVI. Commodore Tarwater’s legacy continues today as the ALYC not only continues to host, but also manages the organization and leadership of SVI.
ALYC is proud of our legacy as the host of SVI and delighted to lead this event. As always, SVI is one of the highlights on our annual calendar.
To volunteer for this year's SVI, contact SVI@ALYC.com.
Members and their guests are welcome to attend.
This will be the last dive and snorkel meeting for 2020.
Election information to be announced.
We are entering Valor again in the Newport Harbor Christmas Parade of Lights. We need to line up volunteers to get ready, and hopefully we’ll win another award! We need help in the following areas:
